School of Physics and Information Engineering

The history of theSchool of Physics and Information Engineering (SPIE) can be traced back to the foundation of Minnan Normal University (MNNU), and Physics was among the first programs offered by the university in 1958. The school started enrollment in the undergraduate program of Physics in 1988 and the postgraduate program of Curriculum and Teaching Theory (Physics) in 2009. The second-leveldiscipline postgraduate program of Computational Physicsand Numerical Analysiswasoffered in 2012. The school started enrollment in the postgraduate program of Subject Teaching (Physics) in 2016 and the professional postgraduate program of Electronic Information in 2020. In 2021, the first-level discipline ofOptical Engineering was qualified to confer the postgraduate degree.

The SPIE covers an area of about 6500 square meters, and the teaching and research equipmentis worth more than 36 million Yuan.SPIE offers seven undergraduate programs, namely Physics (Teacher Education), Electronic Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Photoelectric Information Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Microelectronics Science and Engineering. The school currently has an enrollment of about 1,800 undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as 67 faculty members, among which 47 with senior professional titles and 34 with doctoral degrees. It has formed a teaching and research team composed of a group of outstanding teachers, including the winners of the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the "Hundred Talents Program" of Fujian Province, the outstanding young talents of Fujian Province, the young top-notch talents of the provincial "Eagle Program", and the famous teachers of the provincial colleges and universities.

The SPIE firmly enforces the talents strategy and the educational reform to cultivatehigh-quality talents. Physics and Electronic Information Engineering were awarded the First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Pointsof Fujian Province. The school currently owns two provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, i.e. Basic Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and Electronic Information Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. The program of Electronic Information Engineering was awardedprovincial specialty programs in service industry. The Information and Communication Engineering discipline was listed in the Construction Project of Applied Disciplines in the Universities of Fujian Province. The specialized group of Photoelectric and Sensing Technology was rated as the Exemplary Specialized Groupfor the Industry in Fujian Province. With the support of the faculty, students have actively participated in Normal UniversityStudents' Teaching Skills Competition, National Physics Experiment Competition for university Students, University Students' Electronic Design Competition, Internet of Things Design Competition, Photoelectric Design Competition, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Plan, Physics Grand View Park and other activities, winning nearly 100 national and provincial awards in recent years.

The School of Physics and Information Engineering actively follows the national, provincial, and municipal strategies and has developed interdisciplinary tactics. A number of scientific research achievements applicable to the industry have been obtained in the field of integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing and packaging, optical communication and intelligent illumination, image processing and artificial intelligence, manufacturing of Optoelectronic thin-film material, and light field regulation in micro and nanoscale, as well as intelligent manufacturing.The school has successively been authorized as the industry technology development base for Photoelectric Materials and Device Application of Fujian Province, the demonstration base of Industry-University-Institute Cooperation for the Third Generation Semi conductor Chips Manufacturing Technologies and Core Equipment of Fujian Province. The GaN-Based Semiconductor Materials and Devices project and the Application of Photoelectric Materials and Devicesproject were selected as theProjectsofthe Science and Technology Innovation Teams in the Higher Education Institutions of Fujian Province. In the past three years, the School of Physics and Information Engineering has won six projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and ten projects sponsored by the Provincial Natural Science Foundation.

Under the guidance of President Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, all school members will deeply study Xi Jinping’s important expositions on education and his important speech at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, as well as his important speech and instructions addressed during his visit to Fujian. The school will implement the Party's educational policy, adhering to the original mission of "educating people for the Party and cultivating talents for the country", implementing the fundamental task of cultivating people with morality and comprehensively deepening the reforms. The school will make further and greater contributions to accelerating the promotion of connotative development and improving the level of talent training.
